7 STEPS TO FINDING YOUR PERFECT ATTORNEY

undefined

Finding an attorney is like shopping for a pair of shoes; you want to find one that fits just right. You might feel pressure to retain the first attorney you come across but recognize that you are able to shop around until you find one where it all feels right. Here are seven steps to finding the right attorney for YOU.

  1. Determine what kind of attorney you need. Finding an attorney in the practice area that your case is in as well as the area in which you live is preferable, as it assists your attorney in best representing your interests.
  1. Contact the State Bar Association for qualified attorneys near you. Most associations offer free legal services to aid in finding an attorney. These associations also keep public records about disciplinary actions or complaints taken against licensed state attorneys.
  1. Get referrals from qualified sources. Speak with your friends and family members to see if they have any recommendations from sources they may have used.
  1. Visit attorney/law firm’s websites. Once you’ve created a list of attorneys you may be interested in, visit their websites for a more in-depth look at what the firms’ practice areas are, and to get background information on the attorney.
  1. Contact each attorney on your list to set up a consultation. Note that many law firms charge a fee for the consultation. If you do not feel comfortable paying multiple consultation fees, feel out the vibe you get from just an initial call to the firm to get more information on their process.
  1. During your consultation with an attorney, ask questions. Some good question areas are: pricing, success rate with similar cases, delivery time for legal work, availability, and any past misconduct they may have had.
  1. Choose an attorney that you feel comfortable with. At the end of the day, you want to get along with and like the attorney that you will be working with. Consider the pros and cons of each attorney that you’ve met or spoken with and go from there.
